David Walsh, Mona

Widely credited with putting Hobart on the global map in January 2011 with the opening of his stupendous museum, Mona – the Museum of Old and New Art - David or ‘Walshie’ as locals have affectionately nick named him, is one of Tasmania’s most colourful personalities. With a fortune made from his ‘work’ as the world’s most successful professional gambler and a love of anything that questions convention, most particularly the arts, a chance meeting with David is predictably unpredictable. Mona Foma, his brilliant January music and art event, has recently been topped if that were possible by Dark Mofo, a mid winter solstice celebration (including a nude swim) that left even locals gasping in wonder; yet another brilliant reason to visit Tasmania off season. Keep your eyes spotted for David among the bars of Salamanca and while wandering around Mona. The chances are, thanks to the glass floor in his apartment in the museum, that even if you don’t spot him, he will be watching you…
